“Is it okay to gift someone something dangerous if it could help them one day?”

In an image that was recently presented to us, we saw that a King had given his 5 year children a green, scaly, blue-eyed dragon to help to protect the kingdom. Some may strongly disagree with the King’s choices but nonetheless the King stuck to his decision as he believed that the dragon would protect his beloved children. There would be some people who agreed with the King and some who did not this is because some would say that dragons are far too unpredictable and far too powerful for two 5 year olds to handle. This has led us to discuss the question, “Is it okay to gift someone something dangerous, if it could help them one day?”

It’s all too easy to point out all the negative and harmful effects of having a dragon, but there are many positives that come with having a pet dragon. For example some people may see a dragon as a big, scary, harmful creature but just because this maybe one aspect of how the dragon behaves, doesn’t necessarily mean that this is its true self. This is shown in the “Cape Buffalo” species, these animals are listed as one of the 10 most dangerous animals in the world, yet it is stated that they are a relatively mild species when left alone; they only behave in a dangerous way when they feel threatened, are wounded or are trying to protect their loved ones. Isn’t this the same for all creatures? Humans included! Any animal has the potential to act in a manner that can be see as aggressive or dangerous if they are treated poorly or feel threatened; even the most ‘tame or docile’ ones. A way in which the danger could be reduced with anything is with correct training and guidance, that way what could be seen as a danger could actually been flipped and be seen as a help.

In addition to the point I made, I can understand how having a dragon can be seen as dangerous and how the King may be seen as delusional or reckless for giving his young children a dragon. Although, it should be taken into consideration that humans are known to be the most dangerous species on the planet as we have been killing each other for ten of thousands of years. Not only are we killing each other, but the planet we live on too;we are cutting down rainforests, destroying animals habitats and hunting animals to extinction! Would the King feel safer with his children being surrounded by humans than a dragon? Over time humans have proven themselves (time and time again) to be destructive, manipulative, barbaric creatures that stalk the earth killing and damaging the planet. Would this really be what the King dreamed his Kingdom and the world to become? Therefore, having a dragon as a pet would put the children at no higher risk than they would be with just human advisors and allies.

There are many obvious downfalls to having a dragon as a pet, and many striking arguments that would highlight this point well….but I think that until humans stop killing each other and the planet how can we sit and judge and point out all the negative things about something that is less dangerous than ourselves? With all of these key points in mind I’m unable to see what is so wrong with the King’s decision of giving his children a dragon for protection. I have pointed out all the good things about having a dragon and how we should agree with the King, but the real question is have I convinced you?

  1. Stunning work Phoebe! So much pride and effort on show here and I can see you have really challenged yourself to make this piece the very best it can be! You have really considered your points well and justified them brilliantly with evidence and further development.

A next step I might suggest is to perhaps consider some of the counter-arguments that might be put against your points and defend against them
