Why do we use the poppy symbol for remembrance day?
November 12th, 2017
The remembrance poppy was inspired by the world war I poem ”In Flanders Fields”. It’s opening lines refer to many poppies that were the first flowers to grow in the churned up earth of soldiers’ graves in Flanders, a region of Belgium.
The reason why poppies are used is to remember those who gave up their livesĀ (sacrificed themselves ). Poppies grew on battle fields when world war I ended. In spring 1915 shortly after losing a friend a Canadian doctor wrote the famous poem Flanders Fields . After it was wrote it was said that the poppy will be adopted to the symbol of remembrance day. So the poppy is used to remember people.
