Mountain formation

How are mountains made?

Tectonic plates ,which is one of the layers of the Earths crust, are pushed together so hard they start going up. From a course of over a million years ,mountains are formed. There are many different mountain types from around all over the world such as:fold ,block ,dome and volcanic mountains. So this means no mountain is the same. Because mountains are constantly eroded by the weather ,they are jagged. Also the weather wears the rocky surface away.

Block mountains

For block mountains to be formed a slab of land is broken off then is forced up and it becomes a block of the mountain. When this mountain has grown enough ,there begins to be fault lines on the fault lines is common to have Earth quake’s,. Either side of the mountain is forced to go down whilst the middle is still going up this is how block mountains are made.

Dome mountains

Dome mountains form when magma liquid is pushing a piece of land up wards that creates a dome shape. The added pressure from the molten rock helps make the dome shape of the mountain. Although it has a molten rock in it ,it is not a volcanic mountain as the lava(molten rock)is not erupting through the mountain.

fold mountain

Fold mountains are one of the most common mountains. Slowly ,the tectonic plates push over each other many years pass and the tectonic plates make more and more folds. A good example is the Himalayan mountain range in Asia that mountain range is  50 million years old but for mountains that is young also there are much older mountains in the world. The Himalayan range began to form when the Indian plates started to collide with the Asian plates. Layers of sediment ,which is small amounts of rock and minerals, they also help create this mountain.
