How Mountains are formed

Block mountains

Block  mountains are formed  when a slab of land breaks of and it is forced up as two of earth’s tectonic plates get pulled or pushed away. This means that just a slab of earth can turn into a mountain. There is a thing called fault and a fault is the cause of earth quakes.

Dome mountains

Dome mountains occur liquid rock inside the earth forces the ground above it upwards. This swelling doesn’t break through the surface. The force ,or pressure, produces a dome like shape.

Fold mountains

fold mountains are the most common type of mountains. The tectonic plates push forward slowly over the years , making more and more folds. The Himalayas in Asia are good examples of fold mountains. They are 50. million years old , which is usually quite new! Many mountain ranges are much older. The Himalayas begin to form when the Indian plate collided with the Asian plate. Did you know ?Mount Everest in the Himalayas is the highest point on earth!!!

plateau

Plateaus are a flat area of land found in high places. When mountains form , blocks of earth  can drop and lift next to each other to produce a high mountain and low plateau.

A brilliant information page on mountains and how they are formed. Great use of subheadings and pictures.
